Tompkins County Jail Roster

The Tompkins County Jail inmate roster in New York is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody at the county facility. TompkinsCourt.us provides access to public information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official sheriff's website, by calling the facility, or visiting it in person. Searching the roster allows you to find out a person's custody status, charges, and admission date. The roster is maintained by the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office and is updated periodically throughout the business day. Information is posted on the sheriff's website and is available online 24/7.

Search Current Inmates in Tompkins Jail

There are several ways to find information about individuals currently in custody at the county jail.

Online Search

  1. Visit TompkinsCourt.us to search public court records and inmate data.
  2. If the person has been convicted and transferred to a state facility, use the DOCCS inmate lookup tool — the official database of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
  3. The New York State inmate search portal also allows you to check if a person is in a state-level correctional facility.

For the search, you will need:

  • The person's full legal name
  • Booking number, if known

If the sheriff's website provides a list of inmates in a table format without a search field, use the browser's Ctrl+F function (or Cmd+F on Mac) to find the last name on the page.

Phone Inquiry

Call the jail directly. The operator can confirm if a specific person is in custody if you provide their full name and date of birth.

In-Person Visit

Visit the Tompkins County Jail during business hours. The information window in the lobby is designated for public inquiries.

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster — their records are confidential under New York State law. A list of all county jails in the state is available on the New York State Commission of Correction website.

Find Tompkins Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially registered in the jail. It is the first document that records a person's custody.

During registration, the following data is formed:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • Charges presented
  • Arresting agency (Ithaca Police, County Sheriff, New York State Police, etc.)
  • Demographic information: name, date of birth, gender

These records can be obtained in several ways. The quickest is to check the online roster on the sheriff's website or through TompkinsCourt.us. If the record does not appear in the roster — for example, the person has already been released — a public records request can be submitted. The New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) guarantees access to most government documents, except those subject to specific confidentiality restrictions.

For a statewide criminal history check, there is a separate procedure through the DCJS Record Review, which requires fingerprinting.

Search the Tompkins Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

By Last Name

Enter the person's last name in Latin script. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one letter can change the result.
  • If the system supports partial matches, try entering just the first few letters of the last name.
  • Add the first name to narrow down results when the last name is common.

By Booking Number

The booking number is a unique identifier assigned during registration. It provides an exact result without the risk of confusion with namesakes. This number is usually provided at the time of arrest or can be obtained by calling the jail.

What to Do If the Search Yields No Results

  1. Check the spelling of the name again — the system may use a different variant (e.g., "Robert" instead of "Bob").
  2. The person may have already been released on bail or transferred to a state-level facility. Use the DOCCS search to check this possibility.
  3. The arrest may have occurred very recently, and the record has not yet appeared in the system.
  4. Call the jail at (607) 257-1345 — the operator can manually check the information.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Tompkins

The roster is not updated instantly. There can be a delay of several hours to one business day between the actual admission of a detained person and the appearance of the record on the site. This depends on staff workload and the time of day when the arrest occurred.

Main limitations to consider:

  • Publication delay. An arrest that occurs late at night or on weekends may only appear the next business day.
  • Disappearance of records after release. Once a person is released — on bail, by court decision, or after serving their term — their name disappears from the active roster. This is not an archive.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes a last name is entered incorrectly, complicating the search.
  • Transfers. If a detainee is transferred to a state-level facility, the record disappears from the county roster and appears in the DOCCS database.

The roster reflects only the current custody status. It is not a complete archive of all past arrests in the county. To obtain historical data, a FOIL request must be submitted to the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office or contact the DCJS for a statewide criminal history check.
